North 24 Parganas is the most populous district of West Bengal. According to the census report, it is considered as the tenth largest district in the country. In terms of population it is in second place. Barasat is the District Headquarter of North 24 Parganas. Barasat is the Administrative Headquarter of the 24 Parganas district with five subdivisions composed of Barasat, Barrackpore, Bangaon, Bashirhat and Bidhannagar. The district is surrounded by Nadia district on the north, South Twenty-four Parganas on the south, Bangladesh on the east and Bounded on the west by the Hooghly district, the Hooghly river and Calcutta. East of North 24 Parganas district has an international border with Bangladesh which is about 230 km wide.
